Thousands attend Falwell funeral
Thousands of people have attended the funeral of the leading US conservative
evangelist, the Reverend Jerry Falwell, was attended by thousands of people
in the town of Lynchburg, Virginia.
A private burial was planned on the grounds of Liberty University near a
former mansion where Mr Falwell's office was located.
Falwell, 73, who died a week ago after collapsing in his office at the university,
was the founder in the 1970s of the Moral Majority - a right-wing religious
pressure group. He played an important role in sending Ronald Reagan to
the White House by organizing the conservative Christian vote.
Known as a champion of conservative Christian values, Mr Falwell strongly
disapproved of abortion, homosexuality, pornography and feminism. This
resulted in his getting involved in politics.
However his influence in the politics was on the wane as many leading
Republicans chose not to attend the funeral.
President George W Bush sent a mid-level aide to represent him. 29/04/2007
