According to the US military, a Saudi Arabian prisoner has apparently
committed 'suicide' at the controversial prison camp at Guantanamo Bay
in Cuba.
A statement released by the US Southern Command said the inmate was found
not responding and not breathing by guards, and attempts to revive him
failed.
The prisoner was pronounced dead by a physician after all lifesaving
measures to resuscitate the inmate proved fuitile.
However, surprisingly the statement did not say anything on the cause
of death. The Naval Criminal Investigative Service is investigating the
incident.
Southern Command added that the military has taken the help of a cultural
advisor to ensure that the inmate’s remains were handled "in
a culturally sensitive and religiously appropriate manner."
Last year, two Saudis and a Yemeni inmate hanged themselves at this notorious
US enclave, which is home to some 380 prisoners
The United States has said that prisoners at the Guantanamo Bay detention
facility are "unlawful enemy combatants" and do not have the
same rights as US criminals or prisoners of war as they are "not
protected by the Geneva Conventions covering prisoners of war."
