BBC journo taken in Gaza
Palestinian security services are on the hunt of a BBC correspondent kidnapped
at gunpoint by unknown assailants in Gaza, the latest in a series of abductions
of foreign journalists and aid workers in this volatile territory in the
past year.
The journalist has been identified as Alan Johnston, who has been the BBC's
correspondent in Gaza for three years, one of the few Western journalists
to be permanently based in this increasingly lawless territory. His posting
was due to end in April.
Officials said his rental car was found abandoned in Gaza City and that
a search was underway for the British national by trying to identify the
abductors and bring them to justice.
Alan Johnston, who is single, was forced from his car at gunpoint in
Gaza City as he drove home from his office.
Johnston, 44, joined the BBC in 1991 and has been a correspondent in
Tashkent, Uzbekistan and Kabul, Afghanistan.
The Palestinian interior ministry and the presidency ordered all security
services and police to search for the missing journalist, and officials
spoke out against the abduction.
Recently an AFP photographer Jaime Razuri was abducted in Gaza City on
January 1. He was later released unharmed. 13/03/2007
