China criticises US piracy complaint
China has hit back at the US over its plans to file World Trade Organization
complaints over copyright piracy and counterfeiting saying that the move
was ill-informed and would dent a blow to the trade relations between
the two countries.
The US says that China's failure to enforce copyright laws is depriving
software, music and book publishers of billions of dollars each year.
China expressed "great regret and strong dissatisfaction" at
the U.S. decision to file the complaints, Commerce Ministry spokesman
Wang Xinpei said on the ministry's Web site.
"The move will seriously damage cooperation (on intellectual property
rights protection) that the two parties have already built up and will
have a negative impact on trade relations between the two sides."
Intellectual Property Office commissioner Tian Lipu said it was "not
a sensible move for the US government to file such a complaint" at
the World Trade Organization (WTO).
"By doing so, the US has ignored the Chinese government's immense
efforts and great achievements in strengthening intellectual property
rights protection and tightening enforcement of its copyright laws,"
the commissioner added.
The US has been threatening a WTO complaint against China over unfair
trade practices since 2005.
The Chinese government is yet to receive a copy of the formal U.S. complaint,
but will deliberate upon and actively respond to a formal request. 11/04/2007
