Farrakhan calls for religious harmony
In a fiery speech billed as his final, Nation of Islam leader
Louis Farrakhan railed against US Foreign policy, calling on
the black community to maintain Christian-Muslim unity.
Exhorting the packed Ford Field sports arena audience, the 73-year-old
leader called upon the community not to join the military, as
it "would be the worst mistake you've ever made,"
At a stadium in Detroit Farrakhan spoke to thousands of supporters
coming from as far as California and Texas.
In a two-hour speech on the eve of "Saviours' Day,"
the birthday of Nation of Islam founder Fard Mohammed, the ailing
leader called for the country to force Congress to impeach President
Bush over the unpopular war in Iraq.
"Do something," Farrakhan said to House Judiciary
Committee Chairman John Conyers sitting on the stage, "If
you don't want to impeach him, censure him."
"I have set before you this day two signs -- one of life,
one of death," Farrakhan told his supporters.
The charismatic but controversial Afro-American leader has
been in poor health in recent months.
Farrakhan, who was diagnosed with prostate cancer in the 1990s,
underwent surgery in 2000 to remove an intestinal ulcer stemming
from his treatment.
Though a role model for his supporters, Farrakhan has been
accused by his critics of being anti-Semitism. He has been banned
from entering the UK.
