Workers of the US and UK to unite

If it happens so, it will be first of its kind in the world. Amicus, a foremost union in the UK, is preparing for talks for a possible merger with another union based in the US and Canada. 06/04/2007

If agreed, it would create first International trade union, giving a new direction to the trade union movement.

Amicus General Secretary Derek Simpson will fly to Ottawa to meet officials from United Steel Workers which operates in the US and Canada and has 1.2 million members. He will hold exploratory merger talks with Leo Gerard, president of USW.

Amicus is all set to expand next month when it merges with the Transport and General Workers Union (T&G), making it the UK’s biggest union. The new union to be formed will be named Unite.

Though different countries have different labour laws, a super union will have greater resources so that it can mount campaigns to improve pay and standards across multinational companies.

The talks between Amicus and USW are likely to go on for several months. USW has broadened its membership beyond steel-making and represents workers in the same sectors as Unite. 06/04/2007
