Hollywood opens its wallets to Obama
Democratic presidential hopeful, Barack Obama has been in
Los Angeles for a dinner with a host of Hollywood stars to raise
much needed cash for his tilt the November 2008 presidential
elections.
A number of Hollywood celebrities such as Film producer Steven
Spielberg, actor Eddie Murphy and singer Jackson Browne donated
$1.3m to Obama’s presidential campaign at the event, at
a Beverly Hills hotel.
The event, at a Beverly Hills hotel, was organized by Spielberg
and his Dreamworks studio co-founders Jeffrey Katzenberg and
David Geffen.
Tickets for the star-studded reception were sold for $2,300
- the maximum individual donation for a federal campaign.
Spielberg will also organise an event for Sen. Hilary Clinton
- one of Obama's chief rivals for the Democratic presidential
nomination.
The entertainment industry donated $33 million in the last
presidential election in 2004, and almost 70 percent of that
went to Democratic candidates.
Cheney set to hold US-Japan talks
US Vice-President Dick Cheney arrived in Tokyo at the start
of a trip that would bolster US’s strategic alliances
in Asia, according to the officials.
