Gore warns of “planetary emergency”:
Former US Vice-President Al Gore made an emotional return to the US Congress
to testify Congress on the dangers posed by global warming.
Al Gore's Oscar-winning documentary on climate change, An Inconvenient
Truth, has tracked his efforts around the world to raise awareness about
global warming
Imploring an overflow crowd that "our world faces a true planetary
emergency,” the environmentalist urged the lawmakers to move the
United States toward greater energy efficiency and effective compliance
with the existing Kyoto Treaty.
The US should freeze carbon dioxide emissions and push for a strong climate
change treaty to replace the Kyoto Protocol, which expires in 2012.
Although Gore has said he has no plans to run for president again, he
scores high in public opinion polls and has spoken out strongly against
Bush administration policies in Iraq and other issues.
He called his first appearance in House and Senate committees since losing
the 2000 presidential race to George W Bush "an emotional occasion".
