Chocolate Christ exhibition cancelled

The New York art gallery has decided to cancel the display of a chocolate sculpture of Jesus Christ after protests by a US Catholic group. 02/04/2007 

Artist Cosimo Cavallaro calls his six-foot (1.8m) sculpture "My Sweet Lord," and he used 200 pounds (90 kg) of chocolate to make the sculpture that depicts a naked Jesus Christ with his arms outspread.

The sculpture was to have been displayed from Monday at Manhattan's Lab Gallery at the Roger Smith Hotel, four days before Christians mark Christ's crucifixion on Good Friday.
The timing of the display provoked an outcry.
Bill Donohue, Head of Catholic League, which describes itself as the nation's largest Catholic civil rights organisation, called it "one of the worst assaults on Christian sensibilities ever."

We're delighted with the outcome," said Kiera McCaffrey, spokeswoman for the League.

Mr Cavallaro, the Canadian-born artist, is known for known for his "eclectic" forms of expression and uses food ingredients in his art, on one occasion painting a hotel room in mozzarella cheese. 02/04/2007

Catholic League head Bill Donohue called it "one of the worst assaults on Christian sensibilities ever".

The sculpture will be displayed from Monday at Manhattan's Lab Gallery at the Roger Smith Hotel, four days before Christians mark Christ's crucifixion on Good Friday.

The Catholic League, which describes itself as the nation's largest Catholic civil rights organisation, also criticised the timing of the exhibition.

"The fact that they chose Holy Week shows this is calculated, and the timing is deliberate," Mr Donohue said.

He called for a boycott of the gallery and the hotel where exhibition is being held.
