TV chief quits over Boston scare
The general manager of Turner Broadcasting's Cartoon Network has
resigned over a marketing ply which caused a security alert in
Boston, setting off fears of closing and shutting down major roadways
and subway lines.
The American media major placed several electronic illuminated
across the city as part of a marketing blitz for a Cartoon Network
television show.
Station manager Jim Samples said he felt "compelled to step
down, effective immediately, in recognition of the gravity of
the situation".
The small battery-powered electronic signboards were placed near
roads and under bridges over the Charles River, creating panic
among the commuters.
Bomb disposal squads were sent in before authorities declared
the devices were harmless.
Two men Peter Berdovsky, 27, and Sean Stevens, 28, who planted
the devices, were arrested by the police. They have pleaded not
guilty to placing hoax devices and disorderly conduct.
Turner Broadcasting System has apologized for the scare that led
to city’s biggest security alert since the September 11
attacks in 2001.
