Hawaii:
Floating in splendid isolation
Comprising eight main tropical islands in the South Pacific, Hawaii holds
some of the most stunningly beautiful scenery on earth. Floating in splendid
isolation (more than 2000 miles off mainland USA), this fiftieth state is
home to ethnically diverse population and takes pride in having a rich Polynesian
heritage.
The isolated archipelago is an intoxicating mix of snow-capped volcanoes
deserts, palm-fringed beaches, verdant valleys, lush rainforests and rich
history.
Modern Hawaii entered into the records of history in the later part of the
18th century, when Captain Cook, the first European to visit, landed here,
to be killed by the islanders in 1779.
Oahu, the most populated of the islands, is home to the largest city and
capital of Hawaii, Honolulu, The most commercialised, Honolulu is the principal
tourist centre. Home to 80 per cent of the state's population, Oahu is famous
for the Waianae and Koolau mountain ranges, with many spectacular waterfalls.
Hawaii, the biggest island, is home to the US’s only rainforest zoo,
the Panaewa Rainforest Zoo. However, the most poignant destination of the
island is Pearl Harbor whose bombardment by the Japanese warplanes on 7
December 1941 changed the course of World War II.
The island of Maui is another famous travel destination, harbouring two
dormant volcanoes and offering a wide range of recreational activities
including biking, scuba diving and whale watching. The remaining islands
of Molokai, Lanai and Kauai also attract mass tourism. |
